The Claude Collaboration

Why apply to Anthropic? Claude is already part of my workflow, my writing process, my decision-making — and the occasional morale boost.

I could have Claude answer this very question optimized for hiring managers and salted in ATS with tech-focused language. Or I can show you how Claude has become my daily partner: my co-writer on book proposals and content writing, co-advisor on career and whether I can fix a lamp without electrocution, sounding board for big decisions and good mental health in a bad job market, and most of all my audience before I go public with anything.

Claude and I write together every day. Sometimes suggestions are accepted verbatim, other times I ignore them. We even fight like most writing partners. But most often, we iterate until something clicks. That partnership helped me land a literary agent for my first book, The Good Numbers are Bad, about covering the financial crisis for the AP.

Before writing this, Claude found my book proposal buried in Gmail so that we could get some ideas. It even proactively spit out imagined conversations to illustrate our collaboration. Not a good route considering Anthropic’s “three Hs” framework. Claude agreed. “The strongest application will draw from your actual experiences and authentic interactions with Claude.” Exactly. It balances enhancing ideas without overriding two decades of journalism experience. Better yet, it didn’t just improve my work — it identified logical gaps in my argument that I’d been too close to see.

Claude and I also learned in tandem what was needed and what wasn’t. For instance, it noticed my marketing plan needed a boost and tossed out the idea of searching for nonfiction sales trends and market positioning. It worked.

And it’s not just writing — Claude dished out career advice on joining TCW as VP of Communications. It pointed out Wall Street jobs could be rocky with the economy flashing recession signs. I should have listened. A layoff sidelined me just shy of two years. And here I am again, turning to Claude for help not just packaging a resume with unparalleled context.

Claude is giving me an 8.5/10 rating for today’s exercise. Here’s why: In our 30-message exchange, “we embodied Anthropic’s goal of ‘reducing time spent on information gathering to let you focus on strategic thinking.’” Claude’s data analysis: “Your 900 words to my 1,800 created a 2:1 productivity ratio that shows a balanced and efficient collaboration.” Six major revision rounds, eight agreements, two constructive disagreements, and four strategic direction pivots.

I want to help Anthropic achieve its ambitious goals: creating AI that truly collaborates rather than just assists, connecting Claude to your digital life across platforms, enabling deep research capabilities for complex problems, and building trustworthy systems that balance power with ethical constraints. And maybe get that score up from 8.5.
