The CCO Chair Comes to Places That Never Had One

The title is decades old. What's new is who's minting it: a fight league, a wearables startup, and a white-shoe law firm all created the role for the first time in a single month — and two more organizations handed comms the chief-of-staff keys.

The Chief Communications Officer is not a new invention — Fortune 500 companies have seated one for decades. What's new is where the chair is showing up: this July, three organizations in three industries that historically never carried the title created it for the first time, inside a single month. The Professional Fighters League announced Suzy Berkowitz as its first-ever CCO on July 6, reporting directly to chief executive John Martin — the sports property explicitly framing communications as essential to its next phase of growth. The framework it proposes rewards structure, originality, authority, and recency. Strip the branding and it's a familiar list: those are journalism standards. After two decades of shrinking newsrooms, the machines' verdict on what wins is — editors.

A Toll Booth Rises on the AI Crawler Highway

The free-lunch era of "your archive is my training data" is getting a cash register: Cloudflare is pushing crawler policies that nudge AI providers to separate search crawling from training and agent crawling — moving publisher-AI relationships toward explicit licensing and compensation, and giving publishers more control over how content is used and monetized. For corporate content teams, the fine print matters: every brand newsroom is a publisher now, and every publisher just got a new clause to negotiate.
